Pyramid Mountain Camp

A small intimate fishing camp on the banks of the George River in Nunavik - Arctic Quebec run by Peter May and assorted family members. These are the kind of people I spent a lot of my working life with in central and northern Canada – warm, friendly and considerate.
The George is a big powerful river with very powerful fish. This isn’t a camp for the faint of heart. If you expect to be catered to hand and foot please stay home and let someone with the spirit of adventure and who has the ability to rise to a challenge have your place.
You have to work for your fish. The guides are excellent and will put you on the fish – then it’s up to you. As always there’s lots of good natured advice offered on how to fight the fish with continual cries of “bow to the fish!” (you’ll be waving your fish goodbye if you don’t).

There are landlocked char – not huge but fabulous fighters on light tackle. Just to round things off, beautiful specks reminiscent of the Igloo Lake trophies are ready for the taking.
While you are permitted to take 7 salmon, 5 char and I think 19 pounds of trout, the camp actively supports and encourages catch and release especially when one brings in a hen. The guides work very hard to ensure that a caught fish is returned successfully and will ask you to shake off a fish once you have had a good fight even if you haven’t touched the leader. Use of barbless hooks is encouraged as well.
The camp holds a maximum of 8 guests and a party of six can book the camp exclusively.
Accommodation while rustic, is clean and comfortable.
The camp staff are warm and friendly – meals are good but not exotic. Catch a trout in the evening and have it for breakfast the next morning.
One should remember that everything at Pyramid comes in either by snow machine in the winter or Twin Otter during the season so there is no room for frivolous items (our fabulous cook Danny did manage to bring in fresh tomatoes from his garden in eastern Ontario one year however.) Last season (2016) Danny’s wife Tammy prepared the best roast Canada goose we have ever had.
This is bear country and we normally see a few every year. We leave them alone and they leave us alone so it works well. There are a pair of resident wolves who serenade us on occasion and the northern lights can be spectacular especially when they appear to stream off Pyramid Mountain.
This is a big, raw rough country that really makes one think about how truly insignificant we are.
It’s expensive and difficult to get there involving several changes of aircraft but is well worth the effort. Put it on your bucket list.
